Conley had spent the last three and a half seasons with the Timberwolves after a stint with the Jazz. After starting his NBA career as a first round pick out of Ohio State in 2007, Conley played for the Grizzlies until he was traded in 2019.
He helped the Timberwolves reach back-to-back Western Conference finals in 2024 and 2025, but he finished the 2025-26 season going in and out of the rotation. He averaged 4.5, points and 2.9 assists per game last season.
The Celtics are expected to compete near the top of the Eastern Conference next season, meaning Conley could again be part of a contending team as his career nears its end.
He's the last of the "Core Four" Grizzlies from the Grit & Grind era to still be playing in the NBA. Conley routinely gets showered with attention by Grizzlies fans when he returns to FedExForum, and his No. 11 jersey will surely join Tony Allen, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol in the FedExForum rafters when he officially retires.
After he faced the Grizzlies as a member of the Timberwolves at FedExForum last season, Conley said he was relishing his trip to Memphis and hoped to keep playing.
"A lot of memories, man," he said. "Honestly, you just feel the love everywhere you go around here. The fans are unreal. They've always been loyal. They've always kind of stuck with you regardless of where you end up at. To come back in the building and you look up and see familiar faces everywhere, it's always a good trip going to Memphis."
