Eagles need to ‘save some money’ for this breakout star, coach says

PHILADELPHIA — Jalen Carter’s record-setting contract has been the top storyline during the first two days of Eagles training camp. The Eagles committing up to $160 million over a four-year extension, making Carter the highest-paid defensive tackle in the NFL, is a big deal.

It’s a big deal for Carter. It’s a big deal for Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell, who might reset the cornerback market when they become extension eligible next year. It’s another sign the Eagles are committed to keeping their homegrown stars happy and in the building.

“We’ve drafted players. We’ve re-signed our players,” general manager Howie Roseman said Wednesday. “When you talk about culture, that’s the first thing that comes to mind: ‘If I do well, I’m going to get rewarded. I don’t have to go somewhere else to do that.’”

And yet, one budding star — defensive tackle Moro Ojomo — might have to leave Philadelphia to collect his full reward. Just don’t tell Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

“I like him,” Fangio said Thursday. “Howie needs to save some money for him, too.”

Unfortunately for Fangio, that doesn’t seem like it will be possible.

Ojomo appears to be an odd man out next year after the Eagles committed big money to both Carter and Jordan Davis. The former is the most expensive defensive tackle in football, and the latter inked a three-year, $78 million extension in March.

Handing out massive deals to three d-tackles would be unheard of and seemingly impossible with DeJean and Mitchell slated to ink lucrative deals next spring.

Ojomo, a breakout player in 2025, is good enough to land a serious deal. The 2023 seventh-round pick is set to become a free agent next offseason. Many expect him to follow a similar path to Milton Williams, who signed a $104 million deal with the Patriots last offseason.

Williams was simply a cap casualty. The Eagles would have loved to keep Williams, an integral part of the Super Bowl LIX run. The market for him was just too rich.

Ojomo did a stellar job of filling Williams’ shoes last fall, establishing himself as a force on the interior defensive line. Ojomo played in all 17 games, started nine times and logged 740 defensive snaps. He recorded six sacks, 12 quarterback hits and 38 total tackles.

Ojomo gave opposing offensive lines headaches. Ojomo, Carter and Davis made up arguably the best defensive tackle trio in the NFL last year, and that will be the case yet again.

But will it be the case in 2027 and beyond?

Fangio hopes so — even if it’s not realistic.
