With the win, Tiafoe confirmed his place in the last eight in New York for the fourth time in the last five years. The American continues to play his best tennis at the biggest tournament in his country, now 10-0 in his career at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Entering the match down 6-1 in the head-to-head against Medvedev, Tiafoe got off to the worst possible start. Showing his nerves, he got broken in the very first game. But Tiafoe quickly regrouped to get back on serve immediately.
The first set saw each player break the other’s serve three times, with Medvedev notably failing to serve out the set. Ultimately, the set went to a tiebreak, where Tiafoe raised his level considerably to comprehensively win the tiebreak and go up a set.
From there, with the home crowd and momentum of the first set behind him, Tiafoe kept dictating play from the baseline in this contest. While Medvedev did well to stay with him at the start of the second set, the American’s level ultimately proved too much for the former World No. 1 as he got his serve broken. Unlike the first set, just one break of serve was enough in the second.
The third set was arguably the one in which both players played their best tennis. The players exchanged early breaks of serve, but from there, they each played a clean set of tennis. Once again, though, Tiafoe was the more dominant player on both his serve and return. A tiebreak was needed to settle the third set, and after some back-and-forth points, Medvedev found himself with a set point.
But Tiafoe did not want to extend the match any longer. The American first saved the set point with a brilliant point that tested both his baseline consistency and volleying ability. He then got himself a crucial mini-break, going up a match point on his serve. And Tiafoe just needed one match point in this match. He ultimately closed out what many had thought would be his toughest test yet this tournament in a dominant straight-sets victory.
