South Africa’s coastline stretches for thousands of kilometres, passing through dramatically different landscapes along the way. From whitewashed fishing villages on the West Coast to warm, palm-lined beaches in KwaZulu-Natal and stylish seaside towns in the Eastern Cape, there are plenty of places that could make you feel as though you’ve escaped to southern Europe.

Think sparkling water, colourful harbours, seafood, sunny promenades and a lifestyle where spending an entire afternoon near the ocean is considered a perfectly reasonable use of one’s time.

Here are seven places around South Africa that offer their own version of the Mediterranean.

1. Paternoster, Western Cape

Paternoster remains one of South Africa’s strongest contenders for a Greek-island look.

The small West Coast fishing village is known for its distinctive whitewashed cottages, sandy pathways and views across the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing boats, fresh seafood and the relaxed pace of life make it easy to understand why the destination is often compared with the Greek islands.

While the Atlantic might be a little more bracing than the Aegean, Paternoster has the white-and-blue coastal aesthetic down to an art form.

2. St Francis Bay, Eastern Cape

St Francis Bay offers one of the most obvious examples of Mediterranean-inspired architecture in South Africa.

The town is known for its distinctive white homes and thatched roofs, while nearby Santareme features Mediterranean and Tuscan-style houses. Add canals, boats, beaches and the warm Indian Ocean, and the result feels distinctly European in places.

It’s less a rustic Greek fishing village and more a stylish European seaside escape.

3. Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal

Ballito brings a warmer, more tropical interpretation of the Mediterranean lifestyle.

The North Coast destination has golden beaches, warm water, palm trees, restaurants and an energetic seaside atmosphere. Its sunny climate and outdoor lifestyle make it feel similar to some of Europe’s popular summer resort towns – just with a distinctly KwaZulu-Natal flavour.

Think less Santorini and more Mallorca with Durban humidity thrown into the package.

4. Knysna, Western Cape

Knysna is considerably greener than the classic Mediterranean postcard, but its dramatic scenery still brings to mind parts of southern Europe.

The town sits alongside a large lagoon, surrounded by forests and hills, while the famous Knysna Heads create a spectacular gateway between the lagoon and the ocean. Waterside restaurants, boats and the town’s famous seafood culture add to its European resort-town atmosphere.

It feels a little like the Mediterranean decided it wanted more trees.

5. Port Edward, KwaZulu-Natal

On the far southern end of KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline, Port Edward offers warm weather, golden beaches and lush subtropical scenery.

Its combination of sunshine, ocean views and relaxed holiday-town atmosphere gives it a distinctly southern European resort feel. The surrounding coastline is also home to beaches, estuaries and plenty of opportunities to spend long days outdoors.

It may not have whitewashed Greek buildings, but it certainly understands the Mediterranean philosophy of spending as much time as possible near the sea.

6. Kalk Bay, Western Cape

Kalk Bay captures the atmosphere of a classic Mediterranean fishing harbour.

Colourful buildings line the streets while fishing boats bob in the harbour below. The mix of seafood restaurants, cafés, independent shops, and mountains rising behind the village creates the sort of setting you’d expect along the Italian, Spanish, or French coastline.

Kalk Bay’s charm is that it doesn’t try too hard. It’s still a working harbour, which gives it the wonderfully authentic character many European seaside towns have spent years trying to preserve.

7. Mossel Bay, Western Cape

Mossel Bay brings sunshine, beaches and harbour-town energy together in a way that feels surprisingly Mediterranean.

The coastal destination has dramatic rocky sections, long beaches and a historic harbour, creating scenery that can bring to mind parts of Croatia, Turkey or southern Italy. Its generally sunny climate only strengthens the comparison.

It also reminds you that you don’t have to stick to Cape Town’s famous destinations to find beautiful coastal scenery in South Africa.
