Contract talks dragged on but Liverpool have sealed new deal

Liverpool have completed contract talks for a highly-rated midfielder. They weren't routine, however.
Liverpool are in the process of completing contract renewals coming out of the transfer window, both for senior stars and academy players. Figuring out who is sticking around long-term has to happen, after all, before they can start picking out targets.

There's a lot to get through at the first-team level, of course. Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez are all out of contract next summer. Ronald Araujo's loan deal will end. Certain others will enter the final year of their contracts, too, including Alexis Mac Allister.
Difficult decisions on the way, then. As well as important talks.
Rio Ngumoha is another interesting one. He's due a new deal after breaking into the senior setup and he'll be old enough to sign a long-term one - something that wasn't possible in previous talks.
He now represents the future of this side, and Liverpool are working on deals for other players they hope can join him in that.
Haydn Murray-Holmes has a new deal
Liverpool announced on Tuesday that Haydn Murray-Holmes has a new contract with the club. The teenager broke into the UEFA Youth League setup last season and the plan is for him to kick on further in this campaign, potentially to Under 21 level.
It seems that things weren't entirely smooth, though. This Is Anfield reports that talks were 'lengthy' and it's taken a while to secure a deal with Murray-Holmes.
That has eventually been achieved and we imagine that means the player is set for a bigger role in this campaign.
But this is the problem with trying to secure the biggest talent around constantly. Liverpool aren't shy about poaching players from other academies and that carries the knock-on effect of needing to give everyone guarantees.
Elite players in the academy need to know that Liverpool won't just run out and get a new kid who takes their opportunities. It's a legitimate worry for the kids coming through - and one that the club must balance correctly.
After all, they do want the best talent available at youth level. They've just got to make sure they also look after those they already have.
