The Bianconeri scraped a last-gasp 1-1 draw with Milan last week thanks to substitute Federico Gatti, having previously beaten Frosinone and Parma with fairly unconvincing performances.

The injury crisis just keeps getting worse, as Manuel Locatelli was ruled out for four to six months by meniscus surgery, with Jeremie Boga also sustaining a setback in the same match.

They join Weston McKennie, Andrea Cambiaso, Kenan Yildiz, Khephren Thuram, Jeff Ekhator and Juan Cabal on the treatment table.

In the circumstances, Koopmeiners is brought back out from storage to play in midfield alongside Douglas Luiz.

It’s a very attack-minded front four of Francisco Conceicao, Nico Gonzalez, Alajbegovic and Kolo Muani, with deadline day signing Nick Woltemade ready to come off the bench.

Sassuolo lost the opener to Atalanta, beat Torino 2-1, and were held to a late equaliser by Bologna in that 2-2 thriller.

Coach Alberto Aquilani has many problems to deal with too, as Cristian Volpato suffered a thigh strain and will be out for several weeks, joining Fali Candé, Daniel Boloca, Edoardo Pieragnolo and Ismael Koné on the absentee list.

Kieron Bowie sustained a nasty knock against Bologna too and was a major doubt to feature, but Darryl Bakola recovers.

Sebastiano Esposito therefore gets his first start for the Neroverdi, with club icon Berardi and Armand Laurienté.

Vasilije Adzic, on loan from Juve, is benched in favour of Luca Lipani.
