NBA Fans React As Kawhi Leonard Opens Up About Raptors Return
Seven years after leaving the Raptors in free agency, Leonard is officially set to begin his second stint with the organization. During his previous one-season run in Toronto, the superstar forward immediately showed what he could bring to the team after the Raptors took a major gamble by acquiring him from the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for a DeMar DeRozan-centric package.
Leonard played a central role in leading Toronto to its first title in franchise history while taking home NBA Finals MVP. However, winning another championship was apparently not the main thing on his mind this time around.
“You know, I’m not really championship chasing and trying to find the best team I could win,” Leonard said in an interview released Wednesday. “I didn’t want to put on a thousand jerseys. And the city took a liking to my family. I took a liking to the city, really enjoyed it.
“My son was born here, and he’s been asking me forever when he’s going to come back. So, now he’s back, and he’s able to see it rather than me tell him the great stories that happened.”
Leonard’s explanation for returning to Toronto swiftly generated plenty of discussion among NBA fans on X, with some perceiving it as a subtle shot at some of the league’s other top stars.
“Fried [Kevin Durant] journeyman,” one fan remarked.
“That’s all we needed to know,” another comment read.
“So you dissing [LeBron James], that’s basically what you saying,” one user speculated.
“Should’ve never left the 1st time,” another user chimed in.
Another fan found it to be a “Bizarre statement.”
The trade, which was initially agreed upon on June 30, was temporarily put on hold while the NBA conducted a high-profile investigation into Leonard and the Clippers circumventing the salary cap. The league announced the results of the investigation earlier this month, with the findings resulting in penalties against both sides.
Leonard himself was not suspended, and his contract with LA was not voided. However, as part of the consequences connected to the violations, the 35-year-old was required to pay a $700,000 fine.
Regardless, with Leonard returning to the franchise where he previously delivered a championship, expectations for Toronto are understandably high. With the two-time NBA Finals MVP back on their roster alongside the likes of Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett, the Raptors are expected to take another significant step after enjoying a resurgent 2025-26 campaign.
