Move to secure international tennis in town

The future of international tennis in Eastbourne has moved a step closer to being secured after councillors backed talks on a new long-term lease with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

Eastbourne Borough Council (EBC) has endorsed discussions with the LTA on proposals that would see the governing body take over the Devonshire quarter.
The LTA and EBC also deliver the annual Eastbourne Open International Tennis Tournament, which attracts almost 50,000 spectators and generates a £5m boost to the local economy.
Chris Pollard, LTA managing director of commercial and operations said they are "excited" and "firmly committed" to take on the lease.
The plans remain under discussion, but both organisations say they would help safeguard the future of international tennis in the town.
Under the proposals, the LTA would operate the Devonshire quarter year-round.
The governing body would also invest in improvements including new padel courts and greater public access to courts outside the tournament period.
The plans include expanding year-round opportunities for schools and community groups.
"Our number one priority is to safeguard international tennis in Eastbourne for generations to come," councillor Jenny Williams, cabinet member for tourism and place, said.
"Of course, we also have a responsibility to ensure the most financially sustainable arrangements are in place for local taxpayers."
No final agreement has been reached.
Councillor approval allows the next phase of negotiations to begin, including the development of detailed proposals and legal arrangements.
