Caitlin Clark One Tech Away From Joining Angel Reese in WNBA Suspension Club

· Yahoo Sports

Some of the biggest changes in a player’s game never show up in a box score. ForCaitlin Clark, one of those changes has come in her conversations with referees.

Clark spoke about that shift during Indiana’s media availability for Thursday’s practice. The timing matters because she enters the final four games of the regular season with seven technical fouls, leaving her one away from an automatic suspension.

Caitlin Clark says the pressure changed her approach

Clark did not describe the situation as something holding back her game. She said the opposite has happened.

“I mean, I think it’s certainly been like a conscious effort about it, and I think it’s helped me play better basketball. It’s just like focus on what I need to focus on, you know, and let the last play go. Like, you can’t go back in time and change things,” Clark said during a presser.

That approach gives the technical foul issue a different meaning. Clark is trying to separate the previous call from the next possession instead of letting frustration carry over.

She has also changed the way she talks with officials. Rather than turning every disagreement into another confrontation, Clark said she now tries to keep those exchanges more productive.

“I feel like the refs might also know I have seven technical fouls, so I always try to warn them, like, I’m working with you, I’m working with you, like, let’s have a conversation. I think it’s made my conversations with them more positive and more conversational in both ways for them and for me,” Clark added.

The change comes with real consequences. Under WNBA rules, a player receives an automatic one-game suspension after reaching eight technical fouls during the regular season.

Caitlin Clark still has little room for another mistake

The pressure isn’t new for Clark. She almost hit eight technical fouls in August after getting one during Indiana’s victory over Chicago, but the WNBA took it back after looking at it again. That kept her at seven fouls and helped her avoid a suspension. Angel Reese, a forward from the Atlanta Dream, is in the same situation as Clark.

Now the number remains seven as Indiana heads into a critical closing stretch. The Fever play Toronto on Friday, Washington on Sunday and Minnesota twice next week.

Those games matter beyond Clark’s technical-foul count. Indiana is still fighting for playoff seeding, so losing Clark for one game could affect a team with little time left to adjust.

Clark, though, is choosing to focus on the part she can control. She cannot erase a previous call or prevent every future whistle, but she can control the conversation that follows it.

That may be the biggest change seven technical fouls have forced on her.
