It was certainly not a warm reception for Lane Kiffin on his return to Oxford for the Week 3 matchup against the Ole Miss Rebels. For Ole Miss, it was more or less a payback game against their former coach, and they came out on top after thumping the LSU Tigers 32-24 on Saturday night.
There was a narrative going around for a while that the Rebels wouldn’t be able to win big without Kiffin. But new head coach Pete Golding made sure to send a message that the program was ready to take on top teams and beat them.

Fans Take Swipe at Lane Kiffin After LSU’s Week 3 Loss
When Kiffin jogged off the field, the Ole Miss crowd used the opportunity to vent 10 months of frustration by booing their former coach. It was also an emotional moment for Kiffin, returning to Oxford to face the program he built over six years.
The Rebels, though, made sure to leave no room for a fourth-quarter comeback as they held off LSU.
“Lane Kiffin chose money over loyalty! Ole Miss is playing with dignity, which is something Lane doesn’t have! That’s how motivated they are tonight! They’re better off without Lane Kiffin!” said one fan, referring to the former Ole Miss HC’s dramatic November exit.
Another fan echoed a similar message, saying, “Ole Miss got their lick back! They don’t need Lane Kiffin anymore! They’re better off without him! Lane Kiffin made a jerk move, and it all caught up with him!”
“Ole Miss is better without Lane than LSU is with Lane,” said another user on X.
One person gave Pete Golding his flowers for staying true to the program and securing a win when it mattered most.
After the game, Kiffin was asked about his feelings and whether the loss had brought an end to Ole Miss fans’ frustration.
“I’m sure I’ll be criticized for saying that, but, yeah, I am,” Kiffin said during the postgame presser. “I was thinking that all week, especially today, and I would have said that in a win or a loss. You know, that was really emotional driving in on the buses for a lot of reasons,” he added.
According to PFN’s CFB Playoff Meter, the loss significantly affected LSU’s playoff odds. The Tigers’ chances of making the playoff fell from 73.8% to 59.9%, while the likelihood of making the SEC title game was dented from 30.5% to 15.4%.

Next up, LSU will play the Texas A&M Aggies at home on Saturday, September 26. With a loss already on their record, there is little room for error, and LSU can’t afford to take any more chances if they want to keep their championship aspirations alive.
