NEW YORK – Yankees lefty-hitting slugger Ben Rice smashed his 40th home run of the year, leading off Wednesday night’s home first inning.
Rice connected off Tampa Bay Rays starter Mason Englert, giving the Yanks a 1-0 lead.

As he returned to the dugout, Rice had a friendly exchange with manager Aaron Boone, who had predicted a 39-homer season for his DH-first baseman in spring training.

Rice entered Wednesday night’s game fourth in the AL in home runs, and fourth in OPS (.884).
With teammate and defending AL MVP Aaron Judge on the injured list for most of the year, Rice has led the Yankees in home runs and RBI (96).
