Bucs sign ex-Broncos QB after losing Baker Mayfield to injury; Vikings add ex-Denver RB

After losing starting quarterback Baker Mayfield to a dislocated thumb, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are adding a former Denver Broncos backup quarterback to add more depth at the position.

The Bucs signed quarterback Brett Rypien to their practice squad on Wednesday, the team announced. Rypien will join Easton Stick on the practice squad behind newly promoted starter Jalon Daniels. Stick is expected to serve as the primary backup behind Daniels while Mayfield is sidelined, so Rypien will be QB3 in Tampa.
Rypien, 30, is the nephew of the nephew of two-time Super Bowl champion Mark Rypien. The younger Rypien entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Boise State with the Broncos in 2019, and he spent the first four years of his NFL career in Denver. Rypien, who went 2-1 as a fill-in starter with the Broncos, is now with his 10th NFL club.
Elsewhere on the ex-Bronco front, the Minnesota Vikings signed running back Audric Estime to their practice squad on Wednesday. Estime, 23, was picked by Denver in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft out of Notre Dame. He rushed 76 times for 310 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie season before being cut by the Broncos in 2025.
