Real Madrid are considering a move for Virgil van Dijk if the Liverpool captain becomes available as a free agent next summer, with his contract situation at Anfield beginning to attract attention.

Van Dijk’s current deal expires at the end of the 2026-27 season, meaning he could leave Liverpool without a transfer fee in 2027 if no extension is agreed. The 35-year-old has also indicated that there is currently nothing to report regarding his future.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Real Madrid are among the clubs who could explore a move for the Netherlands international. The possibility of signing an experienced centre-back without paying a transfer fee is understood to be particularly attractive to the Spanish club.
Madrid have already completed a similar deal with Liverpool, bringing Ibrahima Konaté to the Bernabéu on a free transfer this summer. The French defender had formed a successful partnership with Van Dijk during his time at Anfield, making the possibility of the pair being reunited in Spain an obvious subplot to the latest speculation.

However, there is no indication yet that Real Madrid have made an offer or opened formal negotiations for Van Dijk. The report identifies the Spanish giants as one of several possible destinations rather than suggesting a transfer is close.

For Liverpool, the situation is significant given Van Dijk’s status within the squad. He remains captain and has continued to play a prominent role at the start of the season, including in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Bournemouth on September 20. He has also started the campaign alongside young centre-back Jérémy Jacquet.
