If you’re someone of a certain age, could you ever imagine Nebraska starting a season 4-0 and not be all that close to the top 25 in either of the major rankings?
Yes, the Huskers beat two MAC teams, North Dakota from the FCS, and Michigan State, but they won all four games in blowouts, including a solid 31-13 performance last week in East Lansing. Beat Maryland (2-2), and they’ll be 5-0 for the first time since 2016.
The Terps were supposed to be stronger this season, but they lost at home to Virginia Tech, and then got steamrolled by UCLA 54-3 in the Big Ten opener. They’re just dangerous enough to ruin Nebraska’s great start, though.

Why Maryland Will Win
Maryland needs to get its passing game groove back. Malik Washington is a big-time passer coming off a disastrous day against UCLA, throwing four picks in the blowout loss and struggling to get anything going.
But when he’s on, the offense hums. Nebraska has a statistically great pass defense, but it hasn’t played anyone who can push the ball like Washington can. Michigan State is struggling to make things happen down the field, and it was able to throw for over 200 yards. The Terps can’t pull this off without bombing away.
Why Nebraska Will Win
Nebraska hasn’t put itself in a position to screw up.
That was the problem over the last several years of futility and disappointment – the Huskers created new and exciting ways to lose games. And no, they haven’t played anyone truly great yet, but they also haven’t let anyone get close enough to hope that Nebraska will implode.
The Huskers don’t get penalized enough to matter too much, and they only turned the ball over once in the blowout over Bowling Green. They won’t give Maryland the chances it needs.

Maryland will come out firing after the embarrassing performance last week, but Nebraska will steadily keep scoring in the first half to be fine.
And then, like the Michigan State win, the Huskers will start to make the bigger plays in the second half and start to pull away. The Terps will press, the mistakes will follow, and Nebraska will get to 5-0.
