However, Romo is now speaking out after the sports media network’s key decision. The former Dallas Cowboys star was relieved of his duties on Friday after Romo and CBS agreed to part ways.

Romo spent nine years with the network, but his OWI arrest in July put the broadcast company in an uncomfortable position. Ultimately, CBS opted to temporarily sideline Romo in favor of rising star and former NFL pass rusher J.J. Watt.

The 46-year-old joined CBS back in 2017 after retiring from professional football. Romo was forced out of his Cowboys starting QB role when Dak Prescott burst onto the scene the prior season.

Jim Nantz has recently developed a new booth partnership with Watt after being pushed into the No. 1 color analyst role. The Houston Texans legend is now slated to stay on in that position for the entire 2026 season.

Below is Romo’s entire statement after being released from his CBS contract on Friday.

“I’m proud of what I accomplished at CBS Sports over the last nine years. I approached my role as a game analyst the way I’ve approached everything in my life–with a desire to win and be the best that I can be. I’m going to use this time to take a break, something I’ve never done before, and focus on my health and my family before moving on to my next opportunity. I am grateful for my time with CBS Sports and for the continued support of my family and friends, as well as the NFL community and fans.”

It’s unclear what kind of buyout agreement CBS and Romo came to with several years remaining on his contract. CBS reportedly still owed the former NFL star roughly $75 million on his contract before parting ways.

The former NFL star signed a 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS in 2020.

Meanwhile, Romo’s statement suggest a possibility of pursuing another broadcast opportunity in the future. It remains to be seen where that might be with so many top broadcasting teams developing across the NFL landscape.
