Metro Atlanta’s newest pro sports team reveals name, crest, colors

Women’s professional soccer is coming to Atlanta, and now fans know what to call the team.

The new team will be called Atlanta City FC, joining the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United under the ownership of philanthropist and Home Depot co-founder Arthur Blank.
Channel 2’s Tom Regan was at the team’s official unveiling, where the team’s colors, crest and branding were shared with the public for the first time.

It marks a major expansion of professional sports in Atlanta, building off of the hype already in town, and even bigger since the FIFA World Cup.
The popularity of pro-women’s soccer has surged both in Atlanta and across the United States.
To make sure the big reveal hit their goals, a section of Peachtree Street was shut down in Atlanta.

Atlanta City FC is the 17th expansion club in the National Women’s Soccer League.
Blank secured the franchise with a $165 million expansion fee, announced in November last year.
On Sunday, the club hosted its official reveal after extensive input from the commuinty.
Officials said the club will share space with Atlanta United and the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Bez Stadium.
Right now, a $100 million training facility is also under construction for Atlanta City FC in Marietta.
The club’s motto was revealed to be “We play different.”
Resident soccer fans told Channel 2 Action News they were thrilled a pro-women’s soccer team was coming to the metro area.
“You always see little girls playing soccer, and little boys as well,” soccer fan Jenny Schmitt said. “I know it’s so great as a family if you want to bring your little daughter or son to see professional sports, and going to a women’s game is just much more special.”
Schmitt said she planned to bring both of her daughters to games.
