Saturday's prep highlights: Superb day for Mahomet-Seymour girls' cross-country

Oct. 4—t. A handful of area teams stood out at the Mahomet-Seymour Invitational. The host Bulldogs finished fourth, sweeping Fisher 25-14, 25-15 and Armstrong-Potomac 25-20, 25-13 in pool play before losing to eventual champion St. Anthony in the semifinals , with St. Anthony winning 26-24, 25-20 and then falling in three close sets against Normal U-High, with the Pioneers holding on for a 26-24, 24-26, 15-13 victory. Joella Snodsmith and Hannah Martin earned all-tournament honors for the Bulldogs (17-7).
Unity Christian finished 4-1 on the day, with the Lions defeating Bloomington 25-6, 25-16 and sweeping Fieldcrest 25-16, 25-19 before St. Anthony ended Unity Christian's 14-match win streak, with St. Anthony winning 25-22, 25-23. Unity Christian responded, however, by defeating Armstrong-Potomac 25-18, 25-8 and then sweeping Champaign Central 25-21, 25-17. Cameron Brown and Laila Turner received all-tournament honors for the Lions (19-2), with Brown supplying 33 kills and 61 assists on the day and Turner delivering 38 kills in Unity Christian's five matches.

Champaign Central (15-16) went 3-2 on the day. The Maroons defeated Decatur MacArthur 25-20, 25-17, Casey-Westfield 25-20, 25-22 and Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond, with Geneseo (25-22, 22-25, 15-13) and Unity Christian handing the Maroons their two losses. Journey Davis received all-tournament honors for Central as she finished with 32 kills on the day. Brin Armstrong also contributed with 32 kills, 31 digs and 11 aces, while Preston Roberts handed out 56 assists and Grace Bandy made 32 digs.
Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond (20-3) went 3-2 on the day, with the Knights defeating Mattoon 25-11, 25-17, Urbana 25-16, 25-14 and Armstrong-Potomac while sustaining losses against Normal U-High and Champaign Central. Bella Romine made the all-tournament team for ALAH, finishing with 48 kills on the day. McKenna Blaudow (29 kills) and Morgan Casteel (70 assists) also chipped in.
Armstrong-Potomac (15-9) went 1-3 on the day, with the Trojans defeating Fisher 25-17, 25-16, but losing to Mahomet-Seymour, Unity Christian and Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond. Isabel Bullington powered A-P with 25 kills and 24 digs.
. Thomas Davis scored the lone goal for the Bunnies (10-2-2) in a home nonconference match, with Drew Iverson providing the assist on Davis' goal.
. St. Joseph-Ogden ended a three-match winless streak with a nonconference home win at Dick Duval Field during the Spartans' senior day match. Karter Peoples scored a goal for the Spartans (11-5-2), while Lucas Stevens added an assist in the win.
. St. Thomas More led 2-0 at halftime, but the host Sabers couldn't hold on to the lead in a nonconference loss. Brayan Francisco Gaspar and Will Grissom each scored a goal for STM (8-3-3), while Dylan Yeager had an assist on Gaspar's goal.
. Tuscola had the best team finish among area teams during the 1A/2A Peoria Invitational at Detweiller Park, with the Warriors placing 19th out of 41 teams, and Arlin Orr from Urbana having the best individual finish among area individuals. Will Pettry posted the top finish for Tuscola with a time of 16 minutes, 13.4 seconds to place 82nd, while teammate Ky Gardner wasn't far behind with a time of 16:21.2 to place 86th in the field of 296 runners. Orr paced Urbana, which placed 24th, with a 46th-place finish in 15:45.7. Dylan Wiemelt finished 94th for Urbana with a time of 16:28.9. In the 3A race, Champaign Central was the only area school, and the Maroons finished 22nd out of 40 teams. Garrett Smith had the top time for Central, placing 79th out of 277 runners when he crossed the finish line in 16:02.2. Max Ahmari finished 110th in 16:20.4 for the Maroons.
. Mahomet-Seymour stood out at the Peoria Invitational at Detweiller Park, with the Bulldogs finishing second out of 31 teams during the 1A/2A race. M-S compiled 93 points, only topped by the 53 points team champion Chatham Glenwood produced. Anniston Huff paced the effort by M-S as Huff finished fourth out of 241 runners with a time of 17 minutes, 54.5 seconds. Paige Jansen added an 11th-place finish for the Bulldogs in 18:20.1, Ashley Martin placed 19th in 18:44.4, Cora Kasper finished 28th in 19:03.0 and Ava Cvengros placed 43rd in 19:22.9 to round out the team score for the Bulldogs. Urbana was the other area team to compete in the 1A/2A race, with the Tigers finishing 22nd. Marley Yau led Urbana with a 39th-place finish in 19:16.0. Champaign Central competed in the 3A race, with the Maroons placing 28th out of 31 teams. Ramona Sly had the top time for Central, crossing the finish line in 21:06.1 to place 133rd.
. Rosabelle Beyer, Sam Brown and Maddie Hess led Danville during its stay at the Purple-Gold Invitational. The trio of Vikings all finished 3-1 in their singles brackets, with Beyer finishing fifth at No. 1 singles, Brown placing fifth at No. 2 singles and Hess taking home fifth place at No. 3 singles.
