Criminal charges against a star running back at San Antonio's Sotomayor High School have been reduced to theft from the more serious charge of aggravated robbery, court records show.

In July, 17-year-old Cameron Grady was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony.

The case was then presented to a Bexar County grand jury, which on Wednesday indicted Grady on two counts of theft from person, a state jail felony. State jail felonies are the lowest-level felony under the Texas Penal Code, punishable by up to two years behind bars.

Grady made his season debut for Sotomayor in the second week of the season on Sept. 3 against Smithson Valley. Across five games this season, he rushed for 531 yards and four touchdowns on 56 carries. Sotomayor faces Marshall on Thursday at Gustafson Stadium.

He committed in June to play college football at the University of Texas at San Antonio, according to 247Sports.

An affidavit supporting Grady's arrest accused him of stealing a teenager's chain outside a house party June 28 on the far West Side.

The teen told investigators that he and a friend were in the backyard of the house when Grady and a second unidentified suspect "ripped the chains" from their necks and ran off, the affidavit says.

The victims followed Grady and the other suspect into the street, where the confrontation escalated.   As one of the teens tried to recover his chain, the unidentified suspect pointed a handgun at the victims, according to the affidavit.

One of the victims told police that Grady punched him in the face, leaving him with a black eye. The same victim described being struck from behind by several unidentified people before he was able to recover his chain.

After the confrontation in the street, Grady and the unidentified suspect got into a car and drove away, according to the affidavit.

Grady was released from the Bexar County jail July 9 after posting a combined $100,000 bond.

A judge later granted a motion to remove his GPS monitoring device after defense attorneys raised concerns about "the potential for injury posed by the monitor" while playing football.

Grady is represented by the LaHood Norton Goss Law Group, which is led by former Bexar County District Attorney Nicolas "Nico" LaHood.

His case was assigned to Judge Joel Perez presiding in the 437th District Court.
