The hunt is on for a heartless motorist who ran down a pedestrian and left the woman to die on the side of a darkened road in a rural area of Vaughan over the weekend.

The victim – a 60-year-old Richmond Hill resident – was found dead by a passerby on Tuesday afternoon, but investigators believe she was killed two days earlier.

York Regional Police say the woman, whose name has not been released, exited a bus on Pine Valley Dr. at Major Mackenzie Blvd. and was walking north along the east side of the road when she was struck from behind by a northbound vehicle around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters near the scene of the deadly hit-and-run on Wednesday, Const. Kevin Nebrija had a clear message to the offending driver.

“The victim you struck was a live-in caregiver on her way to work,” he said. “The area she was left in was an isolated area and not well lit.”

“Based on the level of injuries she sustained at the time of impact, you knew someone was struck. Fleeing the scene makes it criminal liable and we encourage you to seek legal advice and turn yourself in.”

Nebrija said a passerby spotted a suitcase on the roadway – which investigators later confirmed belonged to the victim – and as they got closer noticed the lifeless woman lying in the grass around 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The passerby contacted police and responding officers found the woman off the side of the road, which is lined by trees and grass.

It’s unknown how long the woman lay there before she died.

“It’s unknown if the victim was killed instantly or if she succumbed to her injuries a short time later,” Nebrija said.

“Where the female was located was a bit off of the roadway, so someone driving by would not see her right away unless they got really close,” he explained.

Nebrija said police are unaware of any missing person report having been filed regarding the woman during the two days between when she was run down and when she was found dead.

“But we are working with family and those who know her to determine exactly what happened,” he said.

“We’re hopeful that someone out there saw something, captured it on their dashcam, knows something, knows someone who might have been involved in this, (and we’re encouraging them) to please contact our investigators,” Nebrija said.

No suspect vehicle description has been released, but Nebrija said it would have sustained “significant” damage.

“The damage on the vehicle would be quite significant considering where the body was found,” he said. “So, we’re also appealing to any body shops in the area who do come across vehicles that would have damage consistent with an impact of a pedestrian to please contact our investigators.”
