‘Enormous price’: Are Bayern interested in Man City star?

Bayern Munich are not interested in signing Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

The German champions are keeping a close eye on the situation at Manchester City, who have been found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules.

Man City could be stripped of several titles and trophies, while they could also face relegation to the lower leagues, which could see their squad completely dismantled.

Top players are likely to leave in that scenario, and Haaland could be in high demand in the transfer market.

Do Bayern Munich want Erling Haaland?

Haaland joined Man City in the summer of 2022 and has established himself as one of the greatest strikers in Premier League history.

The Norway international has scored 169 goals in 205 games across all competitions for Man City, and there would be no shortage of suitors for his signature.

It has been suggested that Arsenal, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich could be among the clubs to move for Haaland if Man City are relegated.

Christian Falk has suggested that Bayern cannot afford to meet his “enormous” wages, and while they will need a striker to replace Harry Kane at some point in the future, a move for Haaland is not practically possible.

The Bild journalist said to CFBayern Insider:

It is NOT TRUE: Bayern are keeping an eye on Erling Haaland amid the Premier League’s ongoing case against Manchester City. FC Bayern are focusing on contract talks with their own top striker, Harry Kane.

The talks are going well and the club thinks the Englishman will decide after the international break. If he signs a new two-year contract (perhaps with the option of a third year) then Vincent Kompany’s side already has a very good player in this position. Don’t forget that there isn’t just the transfer fee to consider with a player like Haaland; there’s also the salary.

Bayern Munich doesn’t tend to pay salaries in the range of what the Norwegian international is earning in Manchester (about €35m [£29.8m], we heard). It’s an enormous price to take the player out of City before even considering the transfer fee.

Even if he were to become available on a free transfer, you’re still paying a signing-on fee for the player. So, at the moment, Bayern are looking at the situation – and they do admire Erling Haaland (as every club in Europe does) – but they’re so happy with Harry Kane that there’s simply no space, on the one hand on the pitch, and on the other hand, on the wage bill.

Bayern Munich likely to stick to their own transfer model

If Man City drop down to the lower leagues, they are unlikely to retain any of their star players, and in that case, Bayern could be interested in some of them, depending on their wages and asking price.

However, Haaland is one of the highest earners at Man City, and clubs such as Real Madrid, PSG, Barcelona and even Arsenal could afford to break their wage structures to accommodate him.

Bayern are unlikely to do anything drastic, especially when their current transfer model is reaping significant rewards both on and off the pitch.
