The Green Bay Packers are searching for additional depth at linebacker following the loss of Edgerrin Cooper on defense. The Packers took a look at an experienced option Tuesday, working out veteran linebacker Deion Jones as they assess their options at the position, according to the NFL transaction wire.

Jones was among four free agents who received a workout from Green Bay, with linebacker Chris Paul Jr. and cornerbacks Cobee Bryant and Dwight McGlothern also getting a look. The Packers did not announce any signings after the group’s workout.

The Packers made changes to its linebacker room after Cooper suffered a season ending Achilles injury during the Packers’ 17-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Cooper officially landed on injured reserve Tuesday, while the team elevated Kristian Welch from the practice squad to help fill the void.

The 31-year-old Jones offers the Packers the most extensive NFL experience among the linebackers they worked out. The former Pro Bowler has played in 128 regular season games, including 91 starts, giving Green Bay a veteran presence as it adjusts to life without Cooper.

The timing of Green Bay’s workout with Jones makes sense given the sudden need at linebacker. Jones would not replicate everything Cooper brings to the defense, and the Packers have not committed to him beyond the workout. His visit does show, however, that Green Bay is already exploring outside options after losing one of its key defensive players.

Jones stands out as the most experienced player from Green Bay’s latest group of tryouts. The 31-year-old linebacker has earned a Pro Bowl selection, started 91 games and previously played under a $57 million contract.
