Verstappen was beaten off the line by George Russell, who then crashed at the end of the first lap, allowing Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli to edge even closer to the world title.
Antonelli was given another gift by Lando Norris crashing into teammate Oscar Piastri, adding to only 13 cars finishing the race.
Due to a number of retirements and a delayed start caused by heavy rain, qualifying has been pushed back to 21:30 local time, 14:30 UK time, and you can follow it live with our team on the ground below.
After five Sprints have already taken place this season in China, Miami, Canada, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, the final one is set to take place at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore. Next year, the number of Sprints will increase to 10; however, the format will not return to the Southeast Asian circuit.
Verstappen set the fastest time in Sprint Qualifying to take pole position for today's Sprint. The Red Bull Racing driver will be joined by George Russell on the front row. This might be Russell's only opportunity to gain ground on Antonelli this weekend, as he is set to start Sunday's Grand Prix from the back of the grid after changing power unit components in his car.
In terms of the championship standings, Antonelli is now 84 points ahead of Russell after the Briton's DNF at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
