North Carolina’s Billy Edwards Jr. dissed by ESPN announcer on hot mic

· Yahoo Sports

Billy Edwards Jr. isn’t exactly a Heisman Trophy candidate for North Carolina, but even he deserves more respect from sports media announcers.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are battling the Pittsburgh Panthers in an important Week 6 showdown. Bill Belichick’s team has the opportunity to spoil Pittsburgh’s perfect 5-0 start.

However, college football fans are getting the vibe that ESPN commentator Tom Hart isn’t the biggest fan of Edwards. Hart was caught on a hot mic dissing the UNC quarterback following a second-quarter commercial break.

“Our hotel breakfast was the Billy Edwards Jr. of hotel breakfasts,” Hart joked without realizing he was on-air.

This might be another good opportunity for broadcasters to remember to be cautious of what they say when they’re on the call of games. That’s especially the case for Hart, who’s calling the Tar Heels-Panthers game on main ESPN.

North Carolina likely isn’t going anywhere in 2026 with its 2-2 record. However, the out-of-pocket comment from Hart in the direction of Edwards is certainly unwarranted.

This season, the Tar Heels senior might not be an elite college football signal caller, but he’s been serviceable. Edwards has seven touchdown passes nearly 1,000 yards through his team’s first five games.

Belichick and his team have the chance to reclaim a winning record if they can complete a second-half turnaround against the Panthers.
