Texas. Again. Not quite sure how, but a Texas team that dropped games to Oklahoma and Florida managed to pull it together for a crucial victory Saturday against previous No. 7 Mississippi. Enigmatic Arch Manning, once considered the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, had an up and down day, but did enough to secure the win. Manning paired his two interceptions with two rushing touchdowns and one in the air. If Texas can win out — and there are potential challenges against Missouri and LSU — it looks like a lock for the CFP. Despite all the recent good fortune, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian continues to squabble with reporters, making him the least copular coach this side of Lane Kiffin.
Big Ten teams with College Football Playoff aspirations. This means you, Iowa and Southern Cal. The Hawkeyes lost the Floyd of Rosedale Trophy game at Minnesota. No shame there. The Gophers are receiving poll votes and have been solid this season. Plus, you can always count on goofball coach P.J. Fleck to pull off at least one upset each season. More difficult to comprehend was the Trojans' blowout loss at Wisconsin on Saturday night. Southern Cal had seemed to rebound from its first loss to Oregon with consecutive close wins against Washington and Penn State. With games left against Ohio State, Indiana and UCLA, it doesn't get any easier for USC.
No. 17 Florida vs. No. 3 Georgia (2:30 p.m., Saturday, ABC). Forever, the bitter rivals have played their annual game in neutral Jacksonville. Fla. But because of major renovations at EverBank Stadium, the game has been forced to relocate for two years at different sites. This year, Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosts and the game will move to more Gator-friendly Tampa in 2027. Then, back to Jacksonvile for good. This will be first game for the Bulldogs since a hard-to-explain home loss to Auburn on Oct. 17. Other than a close win against Alabama, Georgia has torn up every other opponent. Florida beat Auburn earlier in the season before suffering consecutive lopsided losses to Missouri and South Carolina. Perhaps, an upset win at Texas put the Gators back on track.
