Texas survived against Ole Miss on Saturday, winning 34-27. The Longhorns had a dominant first half, leading 24-3, but the second half was a different story. Ole Miss tied the game in the fourth. Texas rebuilt a ten-point lead, but Ole Miss knocked it down to a touchdown. They then recovered an onside kick, but Texas was able to keep Ole Miss out of the end zone to win the game.
Much of the comeback for Ole Miss was aided by poor play from Texas, including multiple failures on third. Some of those third-down failures were a result of penalties that maybe should not have been called on Texas, and Steve Sarkisian took exception to them after the game, per Tyler Horka of Inside Texas.
“Steve Sarkisian says Texas has not gotten feedback from the SEC on some questionable false start calls that went against the Longhorns vs. Ole Miss,” Horka posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Texas went three of 13 on third downs and converted just one third down in the second half. Meanwhile, the Longhorns had three false-start penalties in the game, with all three coming on third downs. Also on all three of them, it seemed Ole Miss had jumped into the neutral zone, leading to a member of the Texas offense jumping.

Those should be encroachment calls, but instead they were called as false starts. The only third down of the second half that Texas converted was initially a third-and-six play, but they finally picked up the encroachment flag. That was on a third-and-six that became a third-and-one. The Longhorns converted, but on the next play, Arch Manning was stripped during a sack, and it was recovered for an Ole Miss touchdown.
Texas made a massive jump up the polls with the win over Ole Miss. They will host Mississippi State on Saturday.
