There are quite a few sleeper teams doing well in the NFL this season, and that always makes football watching a little more fun. With teams like the Chicago Bears, New York Giants and Cleveland Browns thriving, there's been lots of talk about Ben Johnson, John Harbaugh and Todd Monken being favorites for the NFL's prestigious Coach of the Year award.
Johnson could have won last year, with the wonder he worked in his first year with the Bears. This season, Harbaugh and Monken are both resurrecting their teams. But they may miss out on the honor to one other coach.
Kevin Stefanski emerges as a Coach of the Year favorite as Falcons make surprising strides
In a piece out of ESPN on Tuesday, Ben Solak says that he sees Kevin Stefanski of the Atlanta Falcons as a favorite for the honor. If he wins, it'll actually mark his third time picking up the award, putting him in elite company with Don Shula, Bill Belichick and Chuck Knox as coaches who have won the honor at least three times.
"That's right. For those who forgot, Stefanski won Coach of the Year twice in his six-year tenure with the Browns," Solak says.
"The Falcons are well positioned in a weak NFC South to take a division title. Even with the 49ers' injuries considered, Atlanta has plenty of proof it can play with anyone in this league," he adds. "Ending the season 10-7 with a home playoff game feels like the winning ticket. Whether or not that's enough for Stefanski to win his third Coach of the Year recognition, he deserves his flowers in this space. I love the job he's doing in Atlanta."
So, sorry, Ben, John and Todd. This honor is one that might slip through your hands to a familiar face.
