The Tampa Bay Rays were on the receiving end of a massive eight-run fifth inning by the Milwaukee Brewers that led to their downfall in Game 3. Down a manageable 2-0 to start the inning, the Rays suddenly found themselves 7-0 down in a blink of an eye as Cam Booser gave up three hits in three straight pitches.
Rays manager Kevin Cashcould not help but state the obvious when asked about how quickly things unraveled for his team in the fifth.
“It’s definitely deflating. How could it not be?” Cash said.

It should also be deflating for Cash how poorly his top pitchers have performed in the World Series. Peralta, the reigning ALCS MVP, got the fifth inning started but was unable to get past it, just like teammate Drew Rasmussen. Peralta ended up with five earned runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings after coming into the game with a playoff ERA of 1.08.
But the Rays are not the only team that has had things fall apart against the Brewers, who have simply felt like the team of destiny. The reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers held the lead in all four games against the Brewers in the NLCS, but still wound up getting swept.
At this point, it’s hard to see how Kevin Cash can reinflate his Rays team after such a demoralizing defeat. But he will need to do his best to do so before Game 4 on Tuesday, or they could see the Brewers celebrate a World Series sweep on Tampa Bay’s home field.
