Edwards has been out of a job since Wolverhampton Wanderers sacked him in June after seven months in charge. He was a possible candidate to replace Hayen.
However, Burnley will not continue their pursuit after learning that the 43-year-old wants more time to consider his next career move.
The former Wolves manager has built a strong reputation in the Championship, having guided Luton Town to promotion to the Premier League in 2023.
He also had a promising spell at Middlesbrough, leaving the club in November last year with the team sitting second in the table.
Despite his impressive record in the second tier, Edwards is not ready to return to management, leaving Burnley to consider other options.
Former West Bromwich Albion and Valencia manager Carlos Corberan was also considered, but he has distanced himself from the Burnley job.
He has made it clear he’s hoping to land a job in the Premier League after his spell at Valencia.
Burnley sacked Hayen on Saturday night after their disappointing 4-1 defeat to Lincoln City, which left the club 22nd in the Championship table after 12 games.
That puts the Clarets under more pressure after their relegation from the Premier League last term.
Burnley now need a replacement who can improve results and help the team move away from the relegation zone.
The Clarets have also hired David Lopez as their new chief football officer to facilitate the search for a new manager.
Corberan’s close ties with Lopez made him an ideal target, but he has made it clear he doesn’t want to return to the Championship.
Burnley are hoping to finalise an appointment sooner rather than later as they desperately look to avoid suffering consecutive relegations.
