“Cousins’ Three Year Stretch”: PFF Has Kirk Cousins as the Top Washington Commanders Quarterback Over the Last 20 Seasons
· Yahoo Sports
There has been a lot of question marks at the quarterback position for the Washington Commanders over the last 20 years. Washington’s current quarterback is Jayden Daniels, but he was injured for a chunk of the 2025 NFL season. Daniels did have a tremendous rookie season and led the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game before losing to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mandatory Credit: Brad Mills-USA TODAY SportsNathan Jahnke of profootballfocus.com listed the top players on Washington’s roster over the last 20 seasons. At the quarterback position, he listed Cousins as the best quarterback for this Commanders franchise. Cousins served as Griffin’s backup quarterback from 2012-2014, but he became the primary starter for Washington from 2015-2017. Jahnke said,
“While most of the league’s 32 teams had a clear top quarterback over the past two decades, Washington had several contenders. Kirk Cousins and Jason Campbell are the only quarterbacks with three or more seasons of at least 600 offensive snaps, but Jayden Daniels and Robert Griffin III produced the two best individual seasons by a Washington quarterback. Cousins’ three-year stretch was stronger than Campbell’s, giving him the top spot.”
Jason Campbell was a good quarterback for Washington, but Cousins was better. Cousins threw for over 4,000 yards and 25 or more touchdown passes in all three seasons as the starting quarterback for the Commanders. Ever since they got rid of him in 2017, there have been a lot of different starting quarterbacks under center for this franchise. They did make a move for quarterback Alex Smith via trade from the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018, but Smith being Washington’s starter was short lived because of a gruesome leg injury.
Looking back at it now, the Commanders probably would have been better off keeping Cousins for the long haul. He is still in the league at 37 years old. Cousins has played for the Minnesota Vikings, the Atlanta Falcons, and now the Las Vegas Raiders since last playing for Washington. There is a good chance that the Raiders will be his last stop in the NFL before he retires. With that being said, the Commanders should have never let go of Cousins in the first place.
