Tennis: Pirates top Cubs 4-1 to move to 4-1

The Pirates tennis team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 4-1 victory against Madison.

At No. 1 singles, Greensburg's Mason McNulty won in convincing fashion 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Will Weber won 6-0, 6-1. Greensburg's Brody Sanders cruised at No. 3 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0.

At No. 1 doubles, Greensburg's Max Buening and Jaxson Phillips were knocked off 6-0, 6-3. Greensburg's No. 2 doubles team of Rylan Kraushar and Luke Schwering won 6-2, 6-2.

Earlier in the week, the Pirates shut out Jennings County 5-0.

First off the court was Greensburg's No. 3 singles player Sanders with another 6-0, 6-0 win. Soon after that, Greensburg's No. 2 doubles team of Buening and Phillips handily won their match 6-1, 6-1.

The next three spots were hard-fought, according to Coach June Rigney.

At No. 2 singles, Greensburg's Weber won 7-5, 6-3. Greensburg's No. 1 doubles team of Fisse and Schwering rallied from a set down to win 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 in a super tiebreaker. Greensburg's No. 1 singles player McNulty dropped the first set before rallying for the 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win.

In junior varsity action, Greensburg's Jonah Wheat was defeated 8-6 and Greensburg's doubles team of Simeon Wheat and Rylan Kraushar won 8-1.

Batesville 3, Richmond 2

The Batesville tennis team improved to 4-1 on the season by knocking off visiting Richmond 3-2 Tuesday.

At No. 1 singles, Batesville's Jevan Smith was defeated by Alexander Harrick 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Batesville's Carson Meyer defeated Baltazar Torres-Mejia 6-2, 6-3. Batesville's Max Walter lost a tight match to Tej Patel 7-5, 2-6, 10-5 at No. 3 singles.

In doubles, Batesville's No. 1 duo of Wes Peters and Will Patterson knocked off James Scherer and Mason Wetzel 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Batesville's Eli Doll and Coleman West defeated Miguel Mira-Galeano and Samuel Diaz Forero 6-2, 6-3.

In junior varsity action,

Batesville's Parker Smith lost to Joel Zajdel 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Batesville's Tyler Musick defeated Ronan Cross 6-0 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Batesville's Drew Nobbe fell 7-5 to Cameron Kretschman. At No. 4 singles, Batesville's Parker Smith defeated Cameron Kretschman 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, Batesville's Tyler Musick and Matthew Jensen lost 7-5 to Joel Zajdel and Ronan Cross.
