Charles Leclerc Reports Vision Problem After Disaster Italian GP Crash

Charles Leclerc walked away from a heavy crash at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix, but the Ferrari driver’s first concern was not his neck or the car. He said his right eye briefly affected his vision after the impact. This meant additional checks will be needed ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.

During the race at Monza, Leclerc was defending his fourth position against Oscar Piastri from McLaren when his Ferrari lost rear-end grip while navigating Parabolica, the track’s high-speed right-hand corner, resulting in a collision with the outer barrier. As a result of the impact, the race was red-flagged as repairs were make to the barrier. This was a sorry end to Leclerc’s Italian campaign in front of the Tifosi.
Leclerc Says His Vision Was the Main Concern
Leclerc pulled himself out of his damaged Ferrari unaided and received an evaluation from FIA medical staff before proceeding to the medical center at the circuit. Ferrari confrimed to Sky Sports Italia that he was in a stable condition, and soon after he was confirmed to have sustaained no injury.
Speaking after the crash, Leclerc said:
“My neck is fine. It was just my vision that was a bit off at the start. My right eye wasn’t letting me see very well, but now everything’s good. That was what worried me the most when I got out of the car. After that, I’ve got some aches here and there, which is normal after an accident like this, so nothing more.
“I think I’ll have to go through a few more tests. We still need to run some checks on my end, probably tonight and tomorrow, to make sure I’ll be perfectly fit for Madrid. It should be the case, but better safe than sorry.”
Ferrari Must Explain What Happened at Parabolica
The incident took place after just two laps of racing.
“I think between the first and second lap, there was a difference in how the power was being delivered. We’ll look into that, but I don’t want to comment too much before checking the data and confirming it 100%. It’s very frustrating, but that’s how it is. I can’t change the result. I’ll have to look to the future and hope to bounce back in Madrid.”
Leclerc entered Monza fifth in the 2026 championship with 155 points and had already recorded two retirements in 12 completed Grand Prix entries. Adding another DNF at Ferrari’s home event will be painful.
