Daniel Jones’ Colts Comeback Takes Major Step as QB Dominates First-Team Reps

Daniel Jones’ Achilles injury was supposed to make the road back a long one. Instead, the Indianapolis Colts quarterback has spent the entire summer acting like he never left. Jones has not missed a training camp practice. For the Colts, that matters almost as much as how he looks throwing the football.

The Colts are counting on Jones to bring back the offense they had before his injury wrecked their 2025 season. They are not treating Jones like a quarterback coming off an Achilles tear but treating him like their starter, period.

Daniel Jones Takes Control Of Indianapolis Colts Offense

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones speaks ahead of the team’s veterans minicamp Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center in Indianapolis.

Jones suffered a torn right Achilles in Week 14 during the previous season, marking an end to the best part of his NFL career. Just less than nine months later, Jones has completed the entire training camp without sitting out a single practice and has done virtually everything with the starters.

“He had almost 450 more throws than he did a year ago at this time.”

That extra work has given Jones something he never really had during last year’s camp: uninterrupted time running Shane Steichen’s offense as 1st quarterback. He eventually won the job in 2025, and the Colts caught fire behind him, going 8-2 to start the season. Jones finished that run with a 68% completion rate, an 8.1 yards-per-attempt average, and a 63.0 QBR.

Even the numbers explain why the Colts stayed committed after the injury. The Colts gave Jones a two-year, $88 million extension in March before his rehab had even reached the point where he was throwing again. Now, the investment is starting to look a lot less risky.

There is still one thing Jones hasn’t done since tearing the Achilles: play in a real NFL game. That is the final test before Indianapolis opens the season against the Baltimore Ravens on September 13. The Colts kept Jones out of preseason action; however, his work in camp has given them plenty to like. He has moved through practices without obvious limitations and has had enough live reps to get comfortable with the offense again.

That continuity could be important. Indianapolis averaged 32.1 points per game through its first 10 games last season, the best mark in the league during that span. Jones was at the center of it before the injury changed everything.

He has also taken on more responsibility inside the locker room. The 29-year-old was named a captain again for 2026, something he said feels different after spending another year building relationships with his teammates.
