Cena is now firmly retired from wrestling after bowing out earlier this year but is firmly entrenched as one of the greatest to ever do it in the ring. Now a huge Hollywood star as well, Cena very much knows that when he says something even remotely controversial, it’s going to be jumped on.
Cena has done just that this weekend, after comments in a recent interview were published, specifically his view on former WWE owner, Vince McMahon.
“I have no guilt nor shame about my friendship and my relationship with Vince McMahon, you’re obviously going to put this in the article. It’s OK to love somebody when they’re not perfect,” Cena commented in an interview with The Guardian.
Naturally, these comments have drawn plenty of attention online and it seems that given McMahon’s past and general history, fans are split on Cena’s opinion.
WWE fans debate John Cena’s comments on Vince McMahon
Cena’s comments here were always going to cause chatter in the online WWE community.
There are some who will see what Cena is saying from his own personal perspective, while others might well see praising McMahon at all as a no go.
One fan labelled it ‘blind loyalty’ on Cena’s part.
While another fan suggested that Cena is at risk of tarnishing his legacy with such comments.
“If Cena’s not careful, he’s going to damage his own legacy showing loyalty to someone who doesn’t deserve it. Being grateful for what someone did for your career doesn’t mean defending them without question.”
Nevertheless, there were others who took another view and seemed to appreciate where Cena was coming from.
Another fan also claimed Cena owed Vince, adding:
“Cena should have Vince’s back. Without the push he got from Vince John would be putting the fries in the bag somewhere.”
While another fan also suggested that Cena is right to have his own mind and opinion.
“I admire how he’s standing firm and not letting others sway his opinion. People might be upset, but so what? It’s his life and his choice.”
Still, it didn’t stop the witch-hunt towards Cena either, with another fan adding their take on matters.
“John is always so pr trained on EVERYTHING except when Vinny is mentioned!”
It seems, then, that Cena knew what he was saying would grab the headlines and cause a stir. Ultimately, Cena does have a lot to thank Vince for but as with everything, everyone’s opinion is there to be seen on social media.
Whether Cena will regret saying this or not, is another matter entirely.
